Content Management Overview

MEP includes a sophisticated content repository for transcoding, distributing, and managing your content. With automatic handset recognition and on-the-fly content transcoding, the content repository provides optimal media delivery to the wide variety of mobile devices in the marketplace.

The content repository is accessed through the Contents tab of MEP. From here you can upload content in single or batch uploads.

You can deliver content as part of a MEP service in an SMS (text only) or MMS message.

Content types supported by the content repository

The content repository can store an extensive variety of media types. However, for the best delivery results over the wide variety of handset makes and models, we recommend using only the following:

  • Images — jpeg, gif, png
  • Audio — midi, mpeg, mp4, wav
  • Video — 3gpp, mp4, avi
  • Other — Android applications, plain text

How content is organized

Content is uploaded into Content Collections. To help you manage your content further, you can group content in a collection into categories or lists.

A category is a convenient way of grouping together similar items of content. We recommend that you group content items into different categories that represent logical attributes, such as a type of object, color or style. For example, a red car might be in the categories Cars and Red.

Lists let you arrange content into a fixed order. You can use any content that is within the same content collection. You can use lists for subscription services or other cases where several content items need to be grouped together and arranged in a fixed order. Then, in a service, you can select your list and use expression language to increment through the list. This is useful if you have uploaded content with differing order codes that otherwise would be hard to increment.

An item can belong to multiple categories and lists within the same collection.

The version of an item is an instance of the item that matches the requirements of the end user's handset—important for content such as images. MEP automatically creates a set of content versions that are applicable for the most common range of handsets.

You can see the content collections and categories available to you on the Content tab of the MEP GUI.

Note: MEP user access to content is set at the content collections level. Any users with access to a content collection will be able to access the categories in that collection.
